A skill is the ability to carry out a task with pre-determined results often within a given amount of time, energy, or both. Skills can often be divided into domain-general and domain-specific skills. For example, in the domain of work, some general skills would include time management, teamwork and leadership, self-motivation and others, whereas domain-specific skills would be useful only for a certain job. Skill usually requires certain environmental stimuli and situations to assess the level of skill being shown and used.
What is skill Acquisition?
Skill acquisition is the development of a new skill, practice or a way of doing things, usually gained through training or experience. The types of skills that can be acquired through trainings are; hair dressing, fashion designing, tailoring etc; mechanic, photography, writing, electrical, repairs of GSM handset, wrist watches, air- conditioner etc;
The need to have a skill in Nigeria cannot be underemphasized. We are all aware of the situation in the country. The looming unemployment rate cannot be overlooked likewise the not too growing economy has called for the need for all citizen, especially graduates to acquire one or two skills that can help generate stable income, thereby improving their standard of living and making them self-reliant.
Why do you need to acquire a skill?
According to Ngo4all in its article on importance of skill acquisition, Skill is like key used in opening door of fortune. As water is very essential to human life; so is skill needed in the life of every serious minded human being. It further explained that Skills can do a lot of great work in the life of every living soul.
The need for skill acquisition are;
When you learn a particular skill and put it into practise, you will make money from it, thereby making you self-employed and self-reliant. You would not have to take files from one office to another in search of job. All you have to do is put the necessary measures needed in place and start using your skills to put food on your table. Virtually all the successful people in the world are self-employed. there’s no way you can be working in another mans office and record huge success. Example of these people are Bill gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Aliko Dangote e.t.c these men started from scratch, you can do the same.
The job opportunities in so many countries today is very low, government find it hard to provide enough job opportunities that can go round for the graduates. If citizens of a country have the proper skills at hand, there will be lots of jobs in the country.
When someone is well trained on a particular skill, he/she will have apprentices, teach them such skill for a particular period of time before they start up their own. If every citizen should have a skill at hand, everyone will be employed and make a living.
You can never see a skillful man without a job, when someone is very skillful in a field companies reach out to the person to come work for them, especially if its a skill related to engineering.
A perfect example of these are footballers, when clubs or countries discover that a footballer is very good, they reach out to him and bid high amounts of money on them. That is the power of having a skill and knowing it well.
It curbs social vices
An idle man they say is the devil’s workshop, when lots of citizens are unemployed and without skill to put food on their tables, they resolve into crimes thereby disturbing the peace of the nation. However, when youths have things they do, they would not resolve into crimes, they would rather use the skill they acquire to make a living.
What is worth doing, they say its worth doing well, when a man acquires skill he should endeavour to be the best he can be on that particular field as it will not only benefit him and his family but the nation at large. There’s also another saying “use what you have to get what you want” in this context I will say use the skill you have, to make a better living.
